Carers Success Story: Laura

Laura has been with Manchester Carers Centre’s dedicated Young Adult Carers (16-25) service for many years, where through her time with us, Laura has been supported with 1-1 sessions and has attended many of our YACs social events!

When asked how our Young Adult Carers service has impacted Laura, she stated:

“I would say the service has impacted me loads. Since I’ve been a part of the Young Adult Carers service, I have seen staff come and go and they’ve all been fantastic. There is always someone there to offer help and support, and a safe place to talk about things that are so personal, especially during a time of need. The group sessions have been really beneficial to allow that small break from my caring role, provide me with an opportunity to do something new and allow opportunities to be with other Carers in that safe environment. This helps with the realisation that even though we are all Carers for different reasons, we aren’t on our own.

Laura is also a BA university graduate and an upcoming actress and editor! She is proud of lots of achievements, including graduating with a 2.1 at university and passing her driving test, and is currently on an exciting new chapter in life in the film industry.

Regarding her acting and editing journey, here is what Laura had to say:

“I have always enjoyed the aspect of performing having started dancing when I was around three years old. I have always been singing and just wanting to put on shows and perform. One day, when I was at high school, I saw a film at the cinema and the credits came up. I was like “this I what I want to do, I want my name on the big screen!”. Then, with going to university, I also took an interest in editing and since graduating I have done a few acting and editing projects on both short and feature films, alongside being assistant director a couple of times!

“Being a part of a production is a mixture of feelings depending on what you’re doing, it is very time consuming and very long hours, but a family aspect is made on set! You create memories no one else will have, and it is such an amazing feeling when you see the final product and know you’ve had a part in that and as an editor. It’s amazing to be able to put a film together!”

When asked what advice Laura has for any Young Adult Carers who what to take a similar journey and achieve wonderful things like herself, she said:

“If you want to go into performing arts, know the industry is hard to get in to as there is so much competition! I’ve been extremely lucky to get where I am. However, never give up, even if you get knocked down, because there always will be opportunities coming your way! Just do what you can, and a note to everyone: Remember to be kind and respectful to others, because how you treat others plays a big part in life!
